Improving lives one building at a time.

For twenty years Parallel has drawn and built homes, workplaces, clubhouses and civic buildings along the Jersey Shore. The drawing and the building, always in parallel.

Selected work

Two buildings, start to finish.

A 1950s senior center and a 100 year old warehouse, both filmed by Parallel after the last coat of paint. Each film plays on its own: pause it, or jump to a chapter.

Coastal resilience & mitigation

Four feet above the line.

  1. Parallel had just opened up a Point Pleasant summer home to its views of the Manasquan River. Then Superstorm Sandy put more than 30 inches of water above its first floor.
  2. New Jersey now asks new coastal construction to sit 4 feet above FEMA's 100 year base flood elevation. Parallel designs to that line, and helps families find the programs that help pay for it.
  3. The second design raised the home in a way that enhanced the views and left a shaded outdoor room under the deck. Their words: it should feel like it has always been this way.

The studio · since 2005

A family of masons. An architect's eye.

Parallel was founded by Antonio Scalise, RA, AIA, NCARB, who comes from a long family history of masons from Italy and grew up working in the family business. He studied architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, apprenticed under licensed architects, and brings more than twenty five years of field experience to every set of drawings.

That is the idea behind the name: design and construction running side by side. Knowing real field conditions keeps a project practical, on time and on budget, whether it is a custom home or a public building.

“Good design shouldn't follow a rulebook. The traditional can be combined with the modern to create a space that fulfills both form and function.”
